Start by deciding what
you want. This expands on the eulogy and contract you did earlier. Over time
your connection may improve and you may feel you have more to offer the world.
This exercise is useful for that and general problem solving. This process
comes from the here and now and then takes you to your highest connection with
the divine. When I did this process the first time I got a symbol that
represents who I am.
Sit down comfortably.
Close your eyes. Take in a deep breath and let it out slowly. Take in another
deep breath and let it out with a sigh. Now bring your breathe back to your
natural rhythm.
Environment
being in the right
place at the right time.
See yourself standing
where you can take five steps backwards.
Think of a difficult
situation where you would like to have more choice, where you have the
suspicion you are not using all of your talents, where you are not completely
“yourself”. You can also use this exercise for a situation in which you want to
make sure you engage all your talents. Perhaps you can have a look at an area
in your life where you are feeling stuck.
Ask yourself:
Where am I?
Who is around me?
What do I notice in
particular about this environment?
What year is it?
What date is it?
What do my surroundings
feel, look, smell and sound like?
What is going on around
me?
Behavior
You are not your
behavior. Your behavior is as a result of what you believe.
See yourself taking a
step back. Now you are on your behavior level.
Ask yourself:
What am I doing?
How does my behavior fit
into my environment?
How do I respond to my
environment?
Why do I respond the way
I do?
How does what I believe
affect my movement, actions and thoughts?
Capability
behavior that is
reliable, repeated and regular.
See yourself taking
another step back. Now you are on the capability level.
Ask yourself:
How does my capability
show up in my behavior?
What are my talents
active and dormant?
What are my skills?
Am I expressing all the
skills and talents I could use in this situation?
How can I bring out my
dormant talents?
What skills do I have in
my life?
What is the quality of
my thinking?
What communication and
relationship skills do I have?
What qualities do I have
that serve me well?
What do I do well in any
context?
Am I thinking
creatively?
Am I using all my
people’s skills to the best of my ability?
Beliefs and values
beliefs are the
principles that guide actions. Not what we say we believe, but what we act on.
Beliefs give meaning to what we do. Values are why we do. They are what is
important to us – health, wealth, happiness and love. Beliefs and values direct
our lives, acting both as permissions and prohibitions on how we act.
See yourself stepping
back again. Reflect on your beliefs and values.
Ask yourself:
What is important to my?
What do I find
worthwhile about what I do?
What empowering beliefs
do I have about myself?
What disempowering
beliefs do I have about myself?
How can I change that to
an empowering belief about myself?
What empowering beliefs
do I have about others?
What disempowering
beliefs do I have about others?
How can I change that to
an empowering belief about others?
What do I belief that is
different from others?
What do I belief that I
feel is conflicting in my life?
How can I resolve this
conflict?
Identity
is your sense of
yourself, the core beliefs and values that define you and your mission in life.
It is built throughout your life and is very resilient. We express ourselves
through our behavior; skills, beliefs and values, but we are more than all or
any of these. You are not what you do or even what you believe.
See yourself taking a
step back again and think about your unique personality and identity.
Ask yourself:
What is my mission in
life?
What sort of person am
I?
Who and what am I?
What do I want to
accomplish in the world?
What symbol would
express this best for my?
Beyond identity
this is your
connection to the realm of ethics, religion and spirituality– your place in the
world.
See yourself taking a
last step back. Think about how you are connected to all other living beings
and whatever you believe is beyond your physical being.
You can
consider this the spiritual realm. You may have religious beliefs or a personal
philosophy. Take the time you need to get a sense of what this means to you. At
the very least this is about how you, as a unique person, connect with others.
What symbol would best express this feeling?
Get a
sense of your connection to other people, to nature, to the Universe.
Identity
Take this sense of
connectedness with you as you see yourself stepping forward into your identity
level. Make sure you take the physiology of the last level to the identity
level. Notice the difference this makes.
Ask yourself:
With the new information
I just gained, does my viewpoint of my identity change?
Beliefs and values
Take this enhanced sense
of who you are and who you can be, with the symbol that expresses it, and see
yourself stepping forward to the beliefs and values level as you do this.
Ask yourself:
What is important to me
now?
What do I want to be
important?
What do I want to
believe?
What beliefs and values
express my identity?
Capability
Take this new sense of
your beliefs and values and see yourself step forward to the skill level,
keeping the previous physiology from the beliefs and values level.
Ask yourself:
How
are my skills transformed and intensified with this greater depth?
How can I use my skills
in the best possible way?
Behavior
Keep the physiology of
the capability level and step forward to the behavior level.
Ask yourself:
How can I act to express
the alignment I feel?
Environment
See yourself stepping
forward into your real present environment right now.
Ask yourself:
How is my
environment different when I bring these levels of myself to my present
environment?
How do I feel about
where I am with this greater depth and clarity from my values, purpose and
sense of connectedness?
Does the situation look
any different now?
Know that if you were to
bring all this to the problem situation, it would change.
Slowly come back into
the room. Open your eyes.
Marcel feels he works
better when he knows where he is going; “I make time once a year to update my
goals and set out my action plan for the year ahead. I do this because things
change during the year and I may not have achieved everything I wanted to achieve
last year. This then has to be worked into the year ahead.”
